OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics are tired of squandering chances, especially in late September and on a night Sonny Gray more than earned a positive result. Gordon Beckham homered for the division champion Los Angeles Angels, who dropped the As into a tie for the top AL wild card with a 2-0 win Tuesday night. Grey fanned Mike Trout three times among his career-best 12 strikeouts, one month to the day after Jon Lester struck out the Angels slugger three times at the Coliseum. But Gray had nothing to show for it as Oakland was shut out for the seventh time since Aug. 1. "Its one of the major themes of the last month, month and a half," left fielder Sam Fuld said. "Weve had opportunities. Youve got to take advantage of those opportunities." Oakland and Kansas City are tied for the two wild-card spots at 86-71, three games ahead of Seattle with five to play. The Royals beat Cleveland 7-1 earlier Tuesday night and won the season series with the Athletics 5-2, giving Kansas City the tiebreaker. That means if the Royals and As win the wild cards and finish with identical records, Kansas City would host their one-game playoff next Tuesday. Wade LeBlanc (1-1) ran his scoreless stretch to 15 2-3 innings over his last six outings, allowing five hits in 5 1-3 innings for the AL West champions. LeBlanc is the second of three straight left-handers the Angels are throwing in this series. He is making his case to be on the post-season roster. "Any time players perform well, its going to help you to be stronger and help you make decisions," manager Mike Scioscia said. "We havent made any decisions yet but these are two strong starts from Wade." Gray (13-10) is 0-3 in his last six starts. The right-hander has one victory in 11 starts since a 5-0 July that earned him AL pitcher of the month honours. Of Trouts 13 games with three or more strikeouts, three are against the As. Gray struck out eight of the first 11 batters he faced. "That was terrific," manager Bob Melvin said. "He was up for it today. You could see when he came in the dugout there was a look in his eye he was going to get after it." The As had a chance to tie the game in the fifth after Josh Reddicks one-out double. Eric Sogard grounded out two batters later on an off-balance throw by second baseman Howie Kendrick that just beat Sogard, who slid headfirst. Los Angeles went ahead in the second on an unearned run when Erick Aybar scored from third during a rundown. Efren Navarro was caught stealing at second on a 2-6-3-4 double play after Hank Conger struck out swinging. Beckham hit his ninth homer leading off the sixth. "We lost. Whatever I did wasnt good enough tonight. It doesnt matter," Gray said. The As loaded the bases in the eighth against Joe Smith, who retired Stephen Vogt on a shallow fly to right to escape unscathed. Huston Street finished the three-hit shutout for his 16th save with the Angels and 40th overall. "I left a small village of runners in scoring position," Vogt said. Oakland was shut down after scoring 16 runs over its previous two games. That outburst came after the As totalled only 19 runs in their previous 10 contests. "We had some opportunities, and one or two more hits and its a different game," Melvin said. TRAINERS ROOM Angels: Jered Weaver (18-8) had the flu for a second straight day and left the ballpark. Scioscia said RHP Matt Shoemaker is "symptom-free" from a strained left oblique but wont pitch again in the regular season. He still needs to throw off a mound. "You dont want to jump over a step and risk setting yourself back," Scioscia said. UP NEXT Angels: LHP Hector Santiago (5-9, 3.98 ERA) has pitched two or fewer innings in each of his past two starts -- both losses -- after winning his previous three. Gonzaga ran its winning streak to 10 in a row on Thursday night by slipping past Pepperdine on the road, 78-76. As a result, the Bulldogs improved to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in conference. Their lone blemish this season took place at Arizona back on Dec. 6, and the squad will be trying to move to 7-1 in true road games with a victory today. Loyola Marymount notched an 80-68 win at home over Portland on Thursday to put the brakes on a five-game slide and give the team its first win in six tries against WCC competition. The Lions are a game under .500 at home (4-5), and they had lost four in a row at Gersten Pavilion prior to the victory over the Pilots. Gonzaga owns a 63-21 lead in the all-time series with Loyola Marymount, and the Bulldogs have won the last 10 meetings. Gonzaga was in a real dogfight at Pepperdine two nights back, as both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field while taking very good care of the basketball in combining for only 17 turnovers. The Zags claimed a 34-29 edge on the glass, and they drained 6-of-12 3-point attempts on the night. Kyle Wiltjer led all scorers with 24 points, while Domantas Sabonis came off the bench to log a double-double consisting of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Silas Nelson also made the most of his limited minutes as a reserve, netting 11 points thanks to a perfect 4-of-4 shooting effort, which included a pair of treys. Wiltjer raised his team-leading scoring average to 16.8 ppg, and he is followed in double figures by four others, including Przemek Karnowskii (11.dddddddddddd1 ppg) and Sabonis (10.0 ppg), who each grab 6.2 rpg to spearhead Gonzagas effort on the glass, which results in a +10.0 rebounding margin. As a team, the Bulldogs are lighting up the scoreboard for 82.4 ppg, thanks to shooting efforts of .530 overall, .403 out on the perimeter and .703 at the foul line. Conversely, foes are converting only 39.1 percent of their total shots, with 31.9 percent of their 3-point tries being successful. They average just 61.8 ppg. Ayodeji Egbeyemi poured in a career-high 22 points and Marin Mornar registered a double-double with a career-best 21 points and 10 rebounds, as Loyola Marymount knocked off Portland on Thursday night. The Lions made good on 51 percent of their field goal attempts, and that included a sizzling 8-of-12 performance from 3-point range. As for the Pilots, they shot a mere 39.4 percent from the floor, missing the mark on 19 of their 27 long-range launches along the way. LMU went an impressive 20-of-26 at the free-throw line, and also used a 39-33 rebounding advantage to offset the 15 turnovers it committed. Evan Payne scored just seven points in 23 minutes of action off the bench in Thursdays game, but he still serves as the only player averaging double figures for the Lions this season. In fact, Payne is one of the top scorers in the West Coast Conference, currently ranking third at 19.2 ppg. Six others net between 5.0 and 9.7 ppg, helping Loyola Marymount generate 63.8 ppg. The teams defensive effort yields 69.8 ppg, and it is shooting nearly as well as the opposition for the most part. Carelessness with the basketball has been a real issue for the Lions, as they turn it over 15 times per outing. They are however, +2.1 in rebounding differential.
